Backyard Fun!

When I look at our backyard today its hard to believe that a few short years ago it was just a small patio and grass. Apart from the pool we have 3 seating areas, a kids swing, an adult swing, shed and the grill. Unbelievable. I love that we still have some yard area for Seth to play ball in. I never understood the hype about outdoor space, but now that we have some I completely get it- it's an extension of your home that has a different feel to it.

Green Thumb: The Orange Tree

Around 1998 Dean ate an orange and popped the seeds into a cup to see what would happen. 15 years later, this is the result. This tree is so lush and rich that every year we are convinced that it will grow oranges. So, next time you eat an orange, keep those seeds- you might be able to make a tree like this too!

Spring Greens

This outfit is an unexpected hit made of pieces that I really didn't anticipate going together. I've had this green Lane Bryant workshirt for several years now but the green daisy skirt is a new addition that I hadn't worn yet. To pull it together I added an asymmetrical Eloquii belt that I picked up on clearance for about $3. (I'm still mad that Eloquii is going out of business!!)
It all came together for a cool spring look that didn't look any worse for the wear by the end of the day.

The Way They Used to Be...Granny and Grandad

Somewhere in a pile of old photos that I had copied from my aunt years ago I stumbled on this gem, my favorite photo ever. I'm not sure what year this is- probably the late 50s or early 60s. It's my mother's parents in Paris getting on a horse drawn carriage. I love all the subtleties of this picture: my grandad holding the umbrella over her to protect her 'fro. His hand gently supporting her up the step, his dapper suit against her traditional wear, the absolute lack of participation of the driver, the cobblestone street....I love it all. I also love the knowledge that my grandmother, who has been in longterm care with a stroke has the memory of this day tucked in her mind, and she knows that when she does take her last breath, my grandad, who passed over a decade ago, will be there with a hand to gently guide her.

A Weekend in Austin

On Wednesday, I decided to take Friday off and we thought it would be great to have a weekend getaway.  We picked the Hyatt Lost Pines resort in Austin- a few hours drive away and a lot of positive reviews.
We had a fantastic time- I got my massage, we saw the Colorado River  and even caught a street fair downtown Austin on Saturday. Hopefully we'll do these small trips a bit now that we've seen how easy it is.
