My Sunshine

I am amazed at how time seems to fly when you have a little guy to mark the time. It seems like just yesterday that he was a baby and now he is some sort of martial arts Ninja. He turned 5 in October and later this year he'll actually be starting school- unbelievable!

Yesterday was a rare day where I got to do my makeup before taking the shot. I wore this as my Monday blue.

Jewelry storage

One of my bigger challenges with jewelry has been how to keep my pieces tidy yet visible. Over the years I've invested in several jewelry boxes only to end up with a cluttered mess. In the end, the best solution was hanging in front of my face the whole time. This is a belt organizer I picked up from Target a few years ago and it works perfectly for my larger necklaces. Now I can dedicate my jewelry box to bracelets and bangles only-perfect!

My Ultrabook Splurge: Zenbook

Yesterday as we ran through Walmart I literally did a double-take as I walked past the hottest laptop I have ever seen. I now know why some men's heads swivel when a cutie walks by- it's just an unavoidable chemical reaction. I darted back over and noticed it was an Asus Zenbook- which was surprising as I hadn't noticed the product line was so much sleeker in person. Dean had to nearly forcibly remove me from the display and wipe up the trail of drool.
I got home and immediately took stock of my current laptop setup:
1. HP Envy Spectre: Gorgeous piece of glass that doesn't work past about 10 feet from the Wifi connection. Relegated to the spot beside my bedside where the glowing logo keeps me up all night.
2. Toshiba Satellite that works well but weighs a metric ton and works my last nerve by popping open the CD drive every time my hand gets within the vicinity of the button. I gained no joy at all from this purchase as it was only necessary because of the week wireless radio in the Envy.
The solution was easy- sell them both on eBay, and tote the Zenbook around with me as needed. So, today we went and bought my new Zenbook which I absolutely positively love to bits. It's light, has a strong wireless signal (and bluetooth) and runs Windows 8- in other words, it's absolute perfection.

What's in My Bag?

On any given day, here are the staples in my purse:

Wallet:
I went through several wallets before finally finding this gem from Target. It's nice and flat, and on the flip side it has a handy window to hold and display my license. There's a zippered compartment that can hold cash, which I rarely ever have on hand anymore these days.
While I have 3 credit cards, I only carry one on me for cash back rewards. I also carry my debit card and Target card. I've also got my health. Dental, CPR cards and AAA for emergencies.
The strap that snaps over all the cards is ingenious- I can tell at a glance if I'm missing a card, but I'm assured that none will fall out.

Health and Beauty:
My makeup bag matches my wallet and is also a lovely bright pink. I wish it was just a touch larger: it's a tight fit for carrying the 2 lipstick colors I generally wear as well as my Covergirl translucent powder which is all I put on my skin. I use the same lipliner color and blend it into either of my lipstick shades.
I always carry a miniature of whatever fragrance I'm wearing. By the end of the week I usually wind up with 3 or 4 minis in the bottom of my purse. These days I'm fascinated with the J'Adore Dean got me for Christmas.
I always have hand sanitizer on me (and one in my car, one in my desk, one in the kitchen!) This particular one is a flat container that I love that was a promo item from attending some conference or the other.
Tech:
My current phone is the Droid Incredible 4G LTE which is one of the last of the non-monster sized phones left in the Android world. I like the phone a bit, but I still have my eye out for the next keyboard Android phone. (fingers crossed for MWC!)
My Galaxy Tab 7.7 is small enough that I can carry it everywhere with me. With the Verizon 4g connectivity I can use it anywhere with fast speed. I also have it connected to the Eye-Fi wireless card in my camera so I can view and edit all my photographs on the go.

Fill Er Up

My car has reasonable fuel consumption but still... Here's what my gas history has been the past few months. I use an app called Motolog to track my fuel purchases because it has a nice sync function so I can get the same data on my Tablet and my phone.

The Ikea Dust-up

Well, just when you thought things couldn't get any more litigious. Here is an ad from Ikea which has the Thai Transgender Alliance claiming that human rights have been violated. While I can see how some people might not find the ad quite as amusing as I did, how exactly is this violating human rights??
I'm almost more annoyed by the Alliance because this tack takes the spotlight off the conversation about why it might be considered offensive to some (and honestly, that's a dialogue I would not mind having as I could stand to learn more about the community). Instead, we are going to be distracted by how seemingly over-dramatic their response has been.

Loud and Proud

I am so impressed with myself for even attempting to pull this look off. In the past either the houndstooth jacket or tomato red skirt would have been toned down with black but today I put them together for what has to be my boldest look ever.
I bought the jacket from Ashley Stewart early last year and after being slightly disappointed that it was a lighter/less structured fabric than I thought, I relegated it to being my go-to piece over a black sheath. The skirt is from JCPenney and as I often do, I got it in 3 colors because I liked the fit. I got  lot of compliments on this look, which was nice, but it also means I have to really space out the next time these 2 get worn together.

How Do You Read Magazines?

It seems that these days everyone and their brother has an ereader of some sort. But there are so many vastly different ways to read magazines that I've gone through a handful of applications myself. Recently I decided to go with the Google Play app and have been quite pleased with it. Like NextIssue it allows you to get digital versions of some paid print subscriptions but without a lot of the glitches I was dealing with. I also really enjoy the coverflow look on the home screen. What method do you use to read magazines these days?

Mission Accomplished: Project Rearview Cam

He did it! He really did it! The image you are looking at is the view from my rearview cam in the early dawn hours. Dean got the replacement camera and got it hooked it up over the weekend. Aside from the clear picture, I am really impressed with its performance even in the dark.

3 Years Later: Still a Sweet Ride

Exactly 3 years ago today I posted about my Sweet New Ride and I'm pleased to say that the love-fest continues. Today my speedometer hit a nice round number as well:

20 Books A Year Challenge

Every year I challenge myself to read 20 books- no easy feat with all the other stuff I've got going on. But, for the past 2 years I have held myself accountable to that goal keeping a list in Evernote of the books I've read. Here is my list from 2011 where I fell short of the goal:
  1. Enduring Love
  2. Who Moved My Blackberry
  3. In Office Hours
  4. The Help
  5. Cracks
  6. Slammerkin
  7. Something borrowed
  8. Before I go to Sleep
  9. Something Blue
 10. Love the one you're with
 11. Babyproof
 12. This beautiful life
 13. Hunger games
 14.Catching fire
 15.Mockingjay
 16.Heart of the Matter

And in 2012 I fared better:

1. I Do Not Come to you by Chance
2. Half of a Yellow Sun
3. Blackbird
4. Fifty shades of grey
5. Fifty shades greyer
6. Fifty shades freed
7. Gone Girl
8. Let's pretend this never happened
9. Dark places
10.Sharp objects
11.I suck at girls
12.On black sisters street
13.Baba segis wives
14.Tiny sunbirds far away
15.My Horizontal Life
16.Into the darkest corner
17.Beautiful disaster
18.Perks of being a wallflower
19.Warm bodies
20.Still missing

With so little time to go to the movie theatres my favorite method of discovering books is by watching trailers on IMDB and reading the books some of the movies are based on. With that said, I already expect 'The Host' and 'World War Z' to make my list of 2013.

Trend Alert: Black "Power" Bangs

And even as I typed that I felt the weirdness, lol. But I'm definitely noticing bangs as the power look for women of color lately and Michelle Obama is the latest convert. I like the look and am thinking about possibly rocking it myself!

Why No Face?

So you've probably noticed that most of my style pictures have my face cropped out. No, it's not to protect my privacy. I've made my peace with the idea that anyone who stumbles across my blog that also happens to know me in person will have unprecedented insight to my thoughts. It's really more to do with my morning routine:
1. Shower
2. Get dressed
3. Take self-portrait of outfit
4. Have breakfast
5. Brush teeth again
6. Apply makeup

See, right there- I can't figure out how to move number 6 before number 3 and that is the reason why I am in no shape most mornings to include my face. So, I've attached a pic that you can now print and make a cutout of. Feel free to stick it over my outfit shots- enjoy!

Age 5: Him and I

I found an old picture of myself recently and was surprised to realize that I remember that day. I remember my 5-year old self in that pinafore (which had very hard-to-fasten straps). It's an amazing feeling of pseudo deja-vu where I look at my son and can actually remember what it feels like to be the age he is at now.
I hadn't started wearing glasses yet- that was the next year. My parents had separated and I was in kindergarten. I found a really cool picture of my elementary school (as it is today, not then!):

I remember my 5th birthday-my grandparents threw me a lavish birthday party-undoubtedly to take my mind off my parents' separation. I remember this photo:

Here is Seth on his 5th birthday:

One of my main goals in life is to give my son the very best of my real and imagined childhood. So far I feel like I'm succeeding :)

Welcome Home, Dry-Cleaned Clothes

*Cue Barry White Voice-over*
I have a ritual that I follow whenever I pick up my dry-cleaning. First, I hang up the group in the laundry room. I sloooowly peel off the plastic cover, then inhale deeply. Then I remove each item slowly from the hanger and make a pile. Next, I re-hang each item on my hangers and transfer them lovingly into my closet. Mmmmmm-hmmmmm. :)

Blue (not-sude) Shoes

These shoes. Oh.my.goodness. I salivated over these shoes for about 2 months before I finally decided that I would change my life to make space for these shoes. And by 'change my life' I mean that I would have to create specific outfits that would allow me to wear such fancy and colorful footwear. So, I finally bought them from Zappos and I have no regrets at all. In fact, I am so remorseless that shortly after I bought them in black as well.

Blue Moto

While we don't have a uniform (except for my staff wearing scrubs) I like the idea of us adhering to the same colors on set days. Each Monday is blue and I am always excited when I get to wear my favorite blue moto jacket from Avenue Studio.
I  used to always have it zipped up like this:

But lately I've been leaving the jacket open and wearing it like this:

The skirt I usually wear it with is a wool blue/green blend that I've had for ages. It's a lined skirt with a great look:

Green Safari

This little green jacket is one of my favorite easy pieces. It's between a shirt and a jacket and can be dressed up or down. So far I've always worn it with brown but I'm thinking of taking it an unexpected direction next time I wear it.

Yummy snacks

This snack is my latest discovery and when I first saw them I thought they would taste like the sweet potato chips from Blue Mesa grill. Instead, they are less sweet, more salty and ready for salsa/sauce.

Hibachi Night

Last night was what I lovingly refer to as date night with 2 dudes. Dean picked a cool Hibachi joint nearby and we got to see our whole meal prepared in front of us. Seth's reaction to the fire was hilarious and all Smokey the bear safety officer. The food was delicious and we had a fun dinner.

Blah to Belted

Recently I've allowed myself to rock belts in ways that I never would have before. My old rule was 'no beltloops, no belt'. But I've been experimenting with different ways to dress up some of my more mundane pieces. One of my successes has been this old workshirt that has been sitting in the back of my closet for ages- with a bit of belted magic it has an extra bit of pop to it and now I'm considering going even further with a colored belt.

DIY Girl Power!

I watched this entire video with my mouth hanging open. This woman has seriously rocked.my.world. I know it's probably considered sexist to make such a big deal of the fact that Sandra built this closet almost entirely on her own but I can't help it. She is ridiculously talented! The final product is amazing -bravo!

Fuchsia Freedom

Have I mentioned how much I love fuchsia? I attribute it to all the years I spent in grey and black to combat the NYC subway grime. Now I commute in my own car, I can wear any color I want including white if I chose! This Isabella suit is my absolute celebration of that freedom:

My New Camera

Here's my first camera purchase, it's the Sony Cybershot DSC-WX50:

Yesterday I was sure I was going to get the Nikon Coolpix S01 until I saw it in person- there is something about a camera that small....I could already see Seth misinterpreting the camera as belonging to him!
After reviewing all the offerings I decided to go with this Cybershot- a budget camera with some high end features. It has HDMI out, a Carl Zeiss lens and the size is perfect for daily use. I asked Seth to be my model for my new camera and here is what he understood the request to mean:

Holiday Glam

This holiday I had several 'dos to go to but the most stressful one was my clinic's Christmas party. I had planned a fun party in the stockyards and encouraged everyone to come dressy then realized that I didn't have anything that was quite appropriate for a work party.
I was finally able to find this amazing dress from Macy's (no longer available, but showing on Zappos). It's a sequin number from Michael Kors and was orignally at $160 but I snagged it for $35 on sale. Once it arrived though, it was still just too revealing to wear to work. So, I decided to find another way to make it appropriate.
The solution was to pair the dress with a sheer top and a belt, and voila- still very sexy but not in a NSFW kinda way:
I had a great time and the sparkles from the sequins twinkled all night through the sheer top.

Update: Project Rearview Cam

In one of my husband's most used expressions: There's good news and there's bad news. The bad news is that it seems the camera is defective and will need to be replaced. The good news is that the rearview mirror piece works and he was able to connect it to the television to get a preview of what it will look like when its all working :

The image quality is fantastic and I really can't  wait for it all to be hooked up!

Project: Rearview Cam

My most exciting gift this Christmas came from Dean and it's a piece of car tech I've wanted for ages but didn't think I could have since it didn't come installed in my car. Not being the best driver in the world I am always worried about backing up into something and a rearview camera would go a long way to helping with that.

So, today Dean is working on installing my new rearview camera on my Rogue. So far it looks like a mess of wires and he has to call Crutchfield as one element isn't working as he expected.

]
He has gotten the camera mounted and I love how it looks:

Period Inspiration

One of my favorite shows is Mad Men- it's almost single-handedly responsible for the uptick in pencil skirts in my closet. The character I relate to the most is Joan because of her story and her curves. I find that I have a fair number of looks that are modeled on her wardrobe. This look is a revival of some plain pieces I have which are now 'Joan-ed' into something a bit unexpected. The belted vest is something I would not have braved up till last year but I'm actually comfortable enough to draw attention to my waist covered by 3 layers of fabric. The rolled up sleeves are a subtle nod to Peggy's style ("I'm on my typewriter and I've got a deadline, I tell ya!")

Miche Mania!

I discovered the Miche bag in 2009 and have been a lover ever since. Over the past few years I've added shells sparingly and have a small collection I'm quite pleased with :

The magic of Miche is that you buy one base bag and then change the shell to match your mood and outfit. Aside from the simplicity of the system, there is also the fact that I love the shape of the bag. Overall, it's an investment I'm glad to have made, and highly recommend to anyone who isn't tied to spending hundreds of dollars on your purse.

Orange-u-tan

Orange is a tricky color for me- I really don't like the color and  I always feel like a piece of fruit when I wear it. However, this Signature suit from K&G has such an amazing cut to it that I decided to brave the color. This is the only orange I have in my closet and I think it's fierce enough that I can make it work.

Sveiks!

If the stats on Blogger are to believed (and honestly, why would they lie?) then Latvians are loving what I have to say today! When I saw those stats I was surprised because I actually have a connection to Latvia- my old roommate got married to an amazing man from Latvia! His name is Atis and I still keep in touch with them through the magic of Facebook. While it's highly doubtful that his family back at home is the driving force behind today's pageviews, I think it's pretty cool to think that. 'Sveiks' to you all!

Eloquii Obsession

I never really shopped at The Limited back in the day but when I caught a glimpse of the Eloquii line I fell immediately in love. I've spent an obscene amount of money in their online store since they went live earlier this year but I have no regrets at all. This is one of my favorite suits- I bought them as separates which is really nice if you need different sizes for tops and bottoms. I finally got a setup together in our bathroom using my Tab on a stand for self-portraits. This is my first attempt which explains my flailing arms;

The Archives Project

Once upon a time (i.e. from 2005-2008) I had my blog set up on MSN Live Spaces. I blogged all the time about all kinds of things going on in my life- my wedding, my life in New York, our move to Texas and of course, the addition of my son Seth. At some point in time MSN pulled the plug on Live Spaces and I must have missed the memo on when they would be pulling the data offline. By the time Spaces went away I had already made my move to Blogger, so I didn't even notice this had happened. When I did, I was heartbroken that I hadn't had a chance to save all my info...until I recently remembered that I had 'clipped' each month into a notebook in Evernote. So, in keeping with my renewed commitment to my blog, I've started posting all those old entries in the blog. If you're interested in what was going on with me about 8 years ago, check out my archives section and you can find out all about my Treo, Tapwave Zodiac and Microsoft Zune.
