Self Analysis: I Aspire to Watch Way too much TV

It's not even that I get round to watching much tv, but that I always plan to. I am perpetually 3 or 4 episodes behind in the few shows I do get to watch. I need to curate my watch list and set more realistic watching goals.

Wild Wednesday

If there's one print I love- it's anything wild. Leopard, cheetah, zebra, whatever it is, I'm all in. I picked up the Gloria Vanderbilt jacket a few months ago and was apprehensive about being bold enough to wear it to work. I shouldn't have worried- with a black sheath underneath this look makes me stand out and look like a polished professional and not a sidelined club-goer. I don't know if I could get away with an animal print dress, but that is definitely on my wishlist...

Wishlist Item: Google Glass

I am going on record: I want to get the Google glass when it comes out. I think I'm the perfect candidate- I have no sense of direction, frequently multitask and would be glad to free up my hands of my phone while on the move.
If you aren't familiar with this technology, I highly recommend Joshua Topolsky's article.

11 Years on Ebay

I just realized that I've been active on eBay for 11 years! Thinking back on all the things I've bought I remember my first laptop purchase was through eBay. I also bought an amazing full length leather coat. My best sales have been old phones since I used to switch so much that I'd sell them when I could still recoup most of my costs.
It will be interesting to see if ebay is still around in another 11 years! What's your wager!

Weekend Watching: Misfits, Seasons 1-3

This weekend you've all got a homework assignment- you need to get your hands on the first 3 seasons of Misfits. I'm not going to tell you how to get it since it seems they've now taken it off Netflix, but seriously, this one is worth the search. It's a nice change of pace from vampires, zombies and the undead- just 5 regular troubled teens and their hijinks while doing community service. Oh, and they get zapped during a freak storm. And get superpowers. Which are awesome. Seriously, just watch it!

Sweater Dress

This sweater dress is from JC Penney about 2 years ago. I don't go for sweater dresses very often but the collar and sleeve detail were too fascinating to pass up. The only downside to this dress is that its so striking that I can usually only wear it once or twice each winter. But, it's well worth it when I consider how amazing I feel in it.

My SMS-3 apps in one

This app makes things much easier in 3 big ways:

1. MySMS is a standalone SMS application that works very well on my phone.

2. It 'echoes' the SMS to my tablet whether my phone is in the vicinity or not.

3. It also backs up all messages to my Evernote application

Bollywood Obsession

Whenever I ask myself why I continue to shell out $8 for Netflix each month, I inevitably respond: Bollywood! Netflix has an unbelievable amount of Indian movies and if you are a fan like me, it's more than enough reason to keep the service.

Here are my top picks by sub-genre:

Comedy:Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

Not Hot:Padded Hips

Ugh, this one is another fail. Pieces that look great in theory go so very wrong so quickly. These browns were too close to complement each other (maybe because of the fabrics?) and the final straw was what happened around the hips. Allow me to explain: I made the rookie mistake of pulling a sweater over a flared skirt so the effect is that of having padding over my hips. Then I tried to distract from that by adding a belt- never try to draw the eye away from a fixable problem. So, next time I attempt this look I'll use different colors and a pencil skirt.
The second image shows the same sweater in black where I've gone in a better direction: color blocking with a pencil skirt - progress!

Not Hot: Modern Matron

In my mind this combination seemed to have all the makings of a great look- a pop of color over a structured black dress with some pearl accents. In reality it just didn't quite make it. Something about the pairing ended up looking matronly and the funky pearl accents made me look like a matron headed to church choir. I still can't pinpoint exactly what I did wrong here but rest assured, it won't happen again.

Double Header: Warm Bodies & Side Effects

I took a day off last Friday to get a few overdue projects done, but also to just have a much needed day to myself (Dean at work, Seth at daycare). In the afternoon I decided to go to the movies and couldn't decide between Side Effects and Warm Bodies so I saw them both! I had been anticipating Warm Bodies since last October or so when I saw the trailer pop up on IMDB- I even read the book in advance. But the trailer for Side Effects looked intriguing to me and I was excited to see Mara Rooney since I passed on the American remake in lieu of the original Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Side Effects started off great but then didn't really commit to the direction it was headed in. Warm Bodies on the other hand matched up well with the book and was, in my opinion, a great date movie. (Fun fact, on our second date Dean and I went to see Twisted).

Project: Powder Room

Here is what our first floor powder room looked like when we bought our house in 2007:

I really liked how it looked and was excited that the previous owners had opted to leave the ornate mirror behind. And then....Seth happened. Sometime during his potty training he must have found a lift in the wallpaper and before we knew it the entire room was stripped:

Ok, so maybe it wasn't that bad, but it certainly led us to strip the entire room and start from scratch. Dean decided he would do the entire room on his own and let me design it. I knew right away that I wanted to go 'bordello boudoir' and create a moody cave. My first wishlist was inspired from our vacation to Mexico where I became obsessed with basin sinks:
I also wanted the room to be red and after an extensive search I found the exact shade of rice wallpaper that I knew would be perfect in the room. So, with much sweat and muscle, here is what Dean's hands made:

I admit that the finished product is not for everyone, but I absolutely love it. I am also very impressed with Dean's skills! That man is so talented!!

Casual Friday 2.0

At my last clinic, casual Friday had become a very dressed down affair. Most of us wore jeans, and some even wore t-shirts *shudder*. But since I started my new job about 10 months ago, the atmosphere was decidedly more dressed up. I knew I wanted Friday to be a bit more casual than the rest of the week- think 'work-to-happy hour' with ease. So, I settled on Friday being my 'pants' day and then I would just pair them with a less formal top or jacket.
This look is a perfect example of how I've revamped my look- this top used to be paired with jeans on casual Friday, which made it the perfect transition to after work drinks with friends:

These days I dress it up with a belt and Tahari jacket over black pants for a look that's bit bit more polished but still very fun. I've found myself giving old looks new life quite a bit after being inspired by my favorite fashion blogs!

The Case of the 'Invisible' Case

A week from last Sunday I got my dream machine- my new Asus Zenbook Prime and hastily yanked it out of the box and started the lovefest. A few days into it I started to consider what would be the best case option... Unlike my previous setup my Zenbook travels up and down the stairs with me as I use it in the den, bedroom and study.
So, imagine my surprise when I started reading some reviews about the case that came with the laptop....wait, what now? Where on earth was my case? I raced home and found the box stashed in the garage and ripped it open. Deep inside the box, I beautiful case!
I'm so glad I hoard my packaging- throwing the box away would have been an absolute disappointment. Now I have a lovely, low profile case to use with my beautiful Zenbook. Ahhhhhh, this *is* love!

I've got an old school fashion habit that I need to shake: the old matchy-matchy syndrome. I generally prefer solids and even then I can only focus on one main color at a time. This year I want to remind myself to do less matching like this and more branching out into something unexpected like my blue shoes with this look. I will say that I love these shoes. They are the Lennox by Naturalizer and the color is Red Kirsch Shiny:

A Day at the Stock Show

I don't know how I never heard of the Fort Worth Stock Show before this year, but as soon as I found out this existed I knew I had to take Seth- Mr. Wildkratts himself! My friend Bobbie and her granddaughter joined us today as we spent about 3 hours seeing the best in livestock, pets and of course, carnival rides!

TimeLine: Office Spaces

Over the course of my career I've been fortunate enough to have my own office. I've made it a point to take photos and I'd like to share them and tell you the pros and cons of each one. First we start with my office at Columbia. To be honest this space was found and made into an office because my department was newly formed:

The office was fine except that there was a closet behind my office that belonged to another department so periodically I had to deal with some traffic. There was one particularly annoying member of that department who would occasionally sneak and eat her lunch in there which was very annoying! But overall it was a functional space.

Next is my office at my last clinic here in Texas. Aesthetically, this has been the best office. The artwork belonged to the building and the landlord graciously let me relocate it into my office after our construction project was complete:

The major downside of this office was that it had 2 entrances- one door led to the administrative office and one door led to the clinic. So, as hectic as my day would get, there were several times were I would be hit by an incoming call and simultaneous knocks on both doors. I loved the computers we had (HP Touchscreen) and the phone system we had (Shoretel).

And then my current office:

I absolutely love my office at my current clinic. It's a bit dated and at some point I fully expect to have a renovation project but for now I'm very happy with it. I may just be biased because of how much I love my clinic and company, but it really is the happiest space I've had the pleasure to be at.

And, of course there's my home office:

A bit of an untidy mess but it has all my favorite maps (another hobby) and it serves as an upstairs hangout for us (especially when Seth was a baby).
So, there you go- a peek into the spaces were I make the magic happen. Thanks for letting me share them with you.
